Day 11, 100 Happy Days: The Theory of Everything

I saw a really great movie tonight: The Theory of Everything.

I'm not going to write a review - nobody needs to read that. But I will say that this movie made my happy list today. And today, I do have a list. Some days it's a struggle to find one thing to make me happy, and others it's just one happy thing after the other. I've learned to savor those days.

Many things made me happy today, starting from the moment I got out of bed. But the movie is what rounded out the day, and it's what's sticking with me. It was inspiring, and beautiful, and thought provoking.

Also, I've been painting stars lately, so it seemed right in line with what I'm doing, somehow.

Here is my latest little painting, still in progress. I started it today, and I won't be able to work on it for a few days - I need to wait for the oil paint to dry before going in for the final touches.

My Favorite Scrooge

My favorite version of "A Christmas Carol" is from 1951 and stars Alastair Sim as old Ebenezer Scrooge. This is the version I'd scour the TV Guide for every year and stay up late to watch. Usually around midnight on Christmas Eve, if I'm remembering correctly. (Of course that could just be my memory playing tricks on me. Wouldn't midnight on Christmas Eve be the perfect time to watch this movie?

There are different versions of the story that I like for different reasons, but this one is my favorite  because of the ending. No other ending has made me quite as happy as this one. Alastair Sim is delightful as the "post spirits" Scrooge. He laughs like a mad man, dances like a fool, and scares the hell out of his maid. He sings as his eyes are opened to a new day: "I don't know anything, I never did know anything. But now I know that I don't know..." You can't help but love the guy.


Here is the ending to the movie. It's 12 minutes, but it's worth it. It'll make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window

Alfred Hitchcock directed many films that have come to be classics: The Man Who Knew Too Much, Notorious, Dial M for Murder, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, The Birds, North by Northwest, and of course Psycho (which, to my delight and my mother's horror, was shown at an assembly at my junior high school). But my all time favorite Hitchcock movie is Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. Actually this is one of my favorite movies across the board.

In honor of Alfred Hitchcock's birthday, I've found two trailers for Rear Window. The first is the original trailer, it's kind of hokey but fun. The second one was redone to suite our modern tastes. I like it - it's dramatic and it really makes me want to see the movie again!
